Singapore, located at the tip of the Malay Peninsula, historically part of the Kingdom of Singapura, a part of both Majapahit and Siamese kingdoms, and previously known as "Temasek" officially became independent as the Republic of Singapore on 9 August 1965.
A decade of seismic change across the world, the 1960s was a time of hope, promise and new beginnings. Counterculture and social revolution defined an era of new music, clothing, intoxicants and thinking. Boundaries were tested and pushed. The genesis of the modern day Lion City was one of these momentous occasions of the decade.
